False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single virion (virus particle) of the herpes simplex virus,a member of the herpesvirus group. Herpesviruses possess icosahedral symmetry, contain DNA,and are enveloped. The envelope surrounding the herpes simplex virus appears purple, extending beyond the green protein capsid. Herpes simplex is a common parasite of man, causing a variety of infections, including whitlows and cold sores of mouth & genitalia. Genital herpes is one of the sexually-transmitted diseases least amenable to treatment, and has been associated with development of cervical cancers in women. Magnification: X 70,600 at 35mm size | |
