Thermography records the temperature of surfaces by detecting long-wavelength infrared radiation. This image was captured at night; windows can be seen emitting heat from their lights. More popularly known as the 'Gherkin',30 St Mary Axe was built by architects Foster and Partners and houses Swiss Re. The top two thirds were still unoccupied when this image was taken,so appear colder. The bright top is the restaurant. Modern methods were used to limit heat loss,meaning that this tower uses 50% less power than similar buildings
