Leonardo da Vinci. Self-portrait by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519),Italian artist, architect and inventor. Leonardo is most famous for his works of art, such as the Last Supper (1495-1498) and the Mona Lisa (c. 1504). Despite having little formal education,he kept extensive notebooks filled with his scientific theories, inventions and architectural designs. His notes show that he carefully investigated principles of mechanical and civil engineering. His inventions included grinding and polishing devices, and flying machines. This chalk artwork, drawn c. 1512,is accepted as being by da Vinci, but some doubt that it is a self-portrait | |
