Morris William Travers (1872-1961),English chemist. He co-discovered the noble gases neon, krypton and xenon with Sir William Ramsay. They collected various fractions produced by evaporating liquified air. The first fraction they studied in May 1898 had unknown spectral lines, the unique pattern of lines caused by the emission or absorption of light by a chemical. This new element was named krypton. The discoveries of neon and xenon quickly followed. From his work,Travers developed a method of liquefying hydrogen and set up experimental liquid air plants around Europe. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1904 | |
