Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskjold (1832-1901),Arctic explorer,sometimes better known as Adolf,or A.E. Nordenskjold. Born in Finland,but later to live in Sweden,Nordenskjold studied several sciences at university in Helsinki,including geology and mineralogy. He participated in several geological expeditions into the high Arctic in the 1860s and 1870s. He is best remembered for his discovery of the North-East Passage,sailing on the Vega from Sweden in June 1878,reaching the Bering Strait,and returning to Sweden in the summer of 1879.
