Mendel museum library in the Abbey of Saint Thomas in Brno,Czech Republic. The Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884),founding father of genetics,was the sixth abbot of the Abbey. The Abbey houses a collection of Mendel relics (the Mendelianum) that includes original papers and instruments from Mendel's time. Mendel conducted his breeding experiments with pea plants at the Abbey,and so discovered the statistical laws of heredity. From his results,he postulated the existence of a unit of heredity that is now called the gene. A new exhibition,The Genius of Genetics,opened here in May 2002
