Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931),German-born American physicist and winner of the 1907 Nobel Prize for physics. He invented the Michelson interferometer, made precise measurements of the speed of light, and was the first to measure the angular diameter of a star. In conjunction with Edward Morley,he performed in 1887 the Michelson-Morley experiment to detect the motion of the Earth through the postulated ether (a medium believed to be necessary for the propagation of light). The failure to detect any such motion indicated the non-existence of the ether, and led Einstein to his theory of relativity | |
