Kapitsa's laboratory. Crocodile carved above the entrance to the Mond Laboratory,built for the Russian physicist Piotr Leonidovitch Kapitsa (1894- 1984) in 1933. Kapitsa studied for a PhD under Ernest Rutherford at the University of Cambridge. The Mond Laboratory was later constructed for his work on liquefying the gas helium,and the crocodile was carved at his request by the sculptor Eric Gill.
