| Professor Sir Harold Kroto (b.1939),British physical chemist and Nobel Laureate. Kroto is seen here sitting among models of fullerenes ('Buckyballs'),a new form of carbon. Kroto was one of the scientists who,in 1985,first postulated the three-dimensional structure of these molecules. In his left hand he is holding a model of the first of the family to be discovered,the soccer-ball shaped Buckminsterfullerene (C60),in the other hand is a molecule of the rugby-ball shaped C70.
