Portrait of Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900),German inventor and pioneer of the petrol engine. Daimler received his technical education in Stuttgart, then went to work as an assistant to the engineer Nikolaus Otto who had developed the first four-stroke engines. In 1883,Daimler went to work on his own,and was the first to construct a high- speed four-stroke engine. This was lighter and more efficient than its contemporaries and ran on gasoline vapour; the engine made automobiles a practical possibility. In 1885 Daimler installed an engine on a bicycle, making the first motorbike, and in 1887 made a four-wheeled 'car'. In 1890 he founded the Daimler motor company | |
