The English chemist and meteorologist John Dalton,1766-1844. Dalton is famous mainly for his atomic theory. He proposed that every element is composed of very small particles, called atoms, which are indivisible spheres. Different compounds can be formed by the union of atoms of various elements but only in simple ratios. Dalton was also a keen meteorologist and throughout his life, from 1781,he kept daily meteorological records. In 1801 he discovered the Law of Partial Pressures. This stated that the pressure of a gas mixture is the sum of the pressures that each gas would exert if it were present alone and occupied the same volume of the whole mixture | |
