William O. Baker. Portrait of the US chemist and research scientist William O. Baker (born 1915). Baker received his doctorate in physical chemistry from Princeton University,USA,in 1938. He joined Bell Laboratories in 1939,heading its research division from 1955-1973. Baker pioneered the area of macromolecules,polymers used as insulating and structural materials in the communications and electronics industries. These included synthetic rubbers,strong carbon polymers and semiconducting polymers.
