Portrait of Sir William Henry Bragg (1862-1942),English physicist and Nobel Laureate. Bragg is unusual among scientific researchers,in that his notable work didn't start until he was over 40 years old. In 1904 he gave a famous lecture on radioactivity, and in 1909 started researching X- rays at Leeds. In 1913,he discovered that the impact of high-energy electrons on a heavy metal target produced both line and continuous X-ray spectra. The line spectra were characteristic of the type of metal in the target. He and his son analysed these spectra using crystals, founding the technique of X-ray crystallography. He and his son uniquely shared a Nobel Prize in 1915 | |
