Red mullet, grey mullet (top) and mackerel (top left). Red mullet,Mullus surmuletus, was a prized food even in ancient Roman times. They were brought into banquet halls alive, and died in the hands of the guests since their red coloration became most brilliant as the fish died. Red mullet and mackerel are found in the Mediterranean and Atlantic; grey mullet (Crenimugil labrosus) live in ponds and estuaries. Fish are a rich source of vitamin A (necessary for night vision, healthy skin and mucous membranes),vitamin D (important for bone growth) and vitamin B6 (required for the activity of various enzymes) | |
