Air pollution mask. View of a young child in a buggy wearing a face mask to protect him from air pollution in a city. The main source of air pollution in cities is from car exhausts. Cars produce poisonous gases such as nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, carbon monoxide and ozone. They also emit unburnt hydrocarbons and partially burnt, microscopic particles of soot. Cars using leaded petrol also give out lead fumes which have been proved to affect the mental development of children. Face masks like the one shown here may filter out the larger particles of soot but are of little help against the other pollutants | |
