Air pollution. Industrial chimneys give out fumes at sunset. Industrial processes are a major source of sulphur and nitrogen oxides which dissolve in water to form acid rain. The burning of fossil fuels to provide energy for industrial processes is a major source of carbon dioxide. This gas traps heat in the atmosphere (the "greenhouse effect"),leading to global warming. Industrial processes may also give out soot particles. Industrial emissions can mix with fog to form a noxious smog. Photographed by the River Neva in Saint Petersburg,Russia | |
