Colchester,Essex,UK,aerial photograph. North is at top. Colchester is said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain,as it was mentioned as Camulodunum by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder in 77AD. It is older than this, however,as it was the seat of Cunobelinus (Cymbeline) from around 10AD,and would have existed before he came to power. Modern Colchester has a population of around 160,000. It lies around 87 kilometres north-east of London,to which it is linked by the A12 road, which is seen running from top right to centre left | |
