Baalbek,Lebanon. Satellite image of the ancient city of Baalbek (centre). The city is in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa valley. In the first millennium BC the city was devoted to the Phoenician sun god Baal,or Bel. The city later became part of the Roman Empire, when it was known under the Greek name Heliopolis (city of the sun). The Greeks and Romans built extensively at Baalbek and the city is now an important archaeological site. It gained UNESCO world heritage site status in 1984. Although damaged by an earthquake in 1759 the temple of Bacchus is one of the largest and best preserved ancient Roman temples in the world. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 4 February 2000 | |
