Coral reef. Aerial view of a coral reef surrounding Conception Island (not seen) in the Bahamas. Coral reefs are huge expanses of limestone-like formations built by tiny creatures. They build the reefs to provide their colonies with shelter. Corals themselves sift plankton from the water. Reefs provide an extremely diverse habitat for countless animal and plant species. The Bahamas are a group of about 700 low-lying islands in the Caribbean Sea. The sea between some of the islands is so shallow it is possible to wade from one to another. In other cases, the sea bed may drop to over 8 kilometres below the surface | |
