Yellowstone Lake,Wyoming,USA,from the International Space Station. This lake lies in the volcanically active Yellowstone National Park. The movement of large volumes of magma (molten rock) beneath the surface in the late 20th and early 21st Centuries have led to the ground beneath the lake tilting. This has led to the formation of beaches on its northern shore (yellow edges, upper parts of the lake) and flooding of forest on the southern arms (lower centre). The entire region rests on a large volcano (supervolcano),which is thought to have erupted last some 640,000 years ago. The increased activity has raised fears of a catastrophically large eruption in the next few hundred years | |
