Bagnoregio village perched on eroded cliffs. The cliffs are made of tuff,a rock formed from volcanic ash. This rock is soft and prone to erosion, and the area has been eroded by the nearby Chiaro and Torbido rivers. The town dates back to Etruscan times,a pre-Roman civilisation that dates as far back as around 800BC. The precarious position of the village on the cliffs led its original inhabitants to abandon it,for fear of it collapsing. It is now the subject of attempts to preserve it,by reinforcing the cliffs | |
