Badland erosion. Water erosion of soft sandstone due to occasional heavy rain in an otherwise dry environment. The rain cannot soak into the dry earth, which is also unprotected by vegetation, and so runs off it forming dramatic gullies. Badlands are found in Africa and North America, their name comes from French explorers, who called them mauvaises terres a traverser (badlands to cross).
