Caudipteryx. Artwork of Caudipteryx sp.,a small bird-like dinosaur with feathers. This animal lived in the early Cretaceous period, about 100 to 130 million years ago. Although this reptile had feathers,it could not fly,and instead ran on its large and powerful hind legs. Dinosaurs such as this are seen as the links between the reptiles and the birds. Unlike the birds,Caudipteryx's feathers were used for insulation, and maybe display purposes, only. The feathers of modern birds (including the primitive Archaeopteryx) are asymmetrical, but these species had symmetrical feathers, indicating they could not fly. Caudipteryx was around the size of a turkey | |
