Volcanic ash mud-flows. View of tortuous mud-flows made of volcanic ash and water on the slope of a volcano. This mud forms rapidly when hot ash from a volcanic eruption falls on snow and ice on the volcano's slopes. This melts the snow and ice, which captures the ash,and forms fast-flowing mud. These features are also known as lahars. On a larger scale they can be catastrophic, engulfing entire towns in minutes and causing a huge loss of life.
