Lava lake. Lava flows cascading into a lake of molten rock. Darker, cooler, solidifed sections of rock are floating on the lake's surface. The lake is about 150 metres across. The molten rock in the lake is circulating with a clockwise rotation because of the combined momentum of the flows as they enter it. Lava is molten rock which has reached the surface from beneath the earth's crust by travelling along faults in the rock. Photograph of a lava lake in the Pauahi pit during the Mauna Ulu eruptions,Hawaii,on 11 November 1973. Mauna Ulu is a vent of the Kilauea volcano. The Kilauea crater is one of the most active in the world | |
