Katmai volcano erupting,Alaska,USA. This volcanic activity,photographed in 1913,was caused by the massive Novarupta eruption a few kilometres away on 6-8 June 1912. The 1912 volcanic eruption was the largest in the 20th century by volume of material released (some 15 cubic kilometres). One of the most noticeable effects of the 1912 eruption was the collapse of the summit of Mount Katmai to form a large caldera. Contemporary expeditions to the area failed to identify the precise volcano that had erupted. One of these expeditions was by Hesse and Horner in 1913. They climbed Katmai and Horner took this photograph. The 1912 eruption site of Novarupta was identified and named in 1954
