Mount Etna's smoke plumes seen from the International Space Station. North is at top. Earth is brown, water is blue and snow & ice is white. The Mount Etna volcano is not emitting lava but two craters are producing plumes, running from centre to bottom left corner. These contain smoke & ash and are approximately 5 kilometres in height. The city of Catania, which lies in the plumes' paths, was covered in ash and the international airport had to be closed. Photographed on 22 July 2001 | |
