Cretaceous continental drift. Artwork of the position of the Earth's continents 100 million years ago, about mid-way through the Cretaceous period (136-65 million years ago). The Cretaceous continents occupied very different positions to those of today. During the Cretaceous period Africa and South America split to form the Atlantic Ocean (lower centre). Africa also moved northwards away from Gondwanaland, comprised of modern-day Antarctica,Australia & India (bottom right). North America and Asia were joined by a land bridge (top centre). Much of what is now North America,Africa and Europe (upper right) were covered in shallow seas | |
