After tsunami. Ikonos satellite image of part of Little Andaman's coastline. This image was taken on 2 January 2005. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest earthquake for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves,or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. Grey areas show where buildings have been damaged and some washed out to sea, brown areas were once green with lush vegetation. An inlet (centre) has formed near the village of Kwate-tu-Kwage. Inlets channeled water inland, destroying the island's infrastructure and killing in excess of 1000 people | |
