Before tsunami. Image 1 of 2. Composite Ikonos satellite image of Thailand's south-western coast. This image was taken on 13 January 2003. The coast has a number of tourist resorts, including the Blue Village Pankarang resort (upper centre) and the Sofitel Magic Lagoon Resort (lower centre). On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves,or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. The death toll in Thailand is in excess of 5000,with half of those tourists.
