Iceberg B15-A (centre right) approaching the Drygalski ice tongue (upper left) in Antarctica. B15-A was the largest floating object on Earth at the time, with dimensions of 122x27 kilometres. This image was taken on 21st January 2005. On 10th April that year, the iceberg collided with the ice tongue, breaking off an 8 square kilometre section. The presence of the iceberg, which broke off the nearby Ross Ice Shelf in March 2000,prevented sea ice from McMurdo Sound (centre) from breaking up. This hindered supply ships reaching the nearby McMurdo Base, and prevented penguins reaching the open sea to feed, damaging their numbers.
