Typhoon Dale. Coloured infrared satellite image of Typhoon Dale over the South China Sea. The coasts of China (at top left),the Philippines (at lower left) and Taiwan (at upper left) have been added as green lines. The typhoon is the swirl of clouds surrounding the "eye" (at centre). The "eye" is comprised of relatively calm,cloud-free air at a very low pressure. Around this "eye" are heavily- clouded areas which feature strong winds and heavy rain. Typhoons often cause deaths and extensive damage to property. Image taken by the Japanese Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) on 10 November 1996 | |
