The dust plume (brown,centre left) has been blown several thousand kilometres westwards from the Sahara,the world's largest desert. Clouds (white) are also seen. Large dust plumes like this can cross the Atlantic,and provide nutrients for soils in the Caribbean and South America. This image was obtained on 23 June 2007 by the MODIS instruments on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. The blank areas (white) were outside the viewing range of the satellites.
