| Rainfall. Distant view of rainfall on fields. Two showers can be seen (at left and right) as white sheets of rain emerging from a dark grey cloud (at upper frame). Rain is the precipitation of small drops of water. Raindrops generally have a diameter of between 0.5mm and 3mm. Larger drops break up as they fall through the air. Air masses acquire moisture as they pass over warm bodies of water or wet land masses. The moisture is carried upwards by turbulence and convection. Rainfall results from the cooling and condensation of this moisture by winds or by being forced to rise over land masses. Photographed in southern France | |
