Cumulonimbus cloud. The side of a developing cumulonimbus cloud, the most powerful type of cloud known. Cumulonimbus are formed under highly- convective conditions, reaching from a low base (about 1500 metres above ground level) to altitudes of 10 to 15 kilometres. Their interiors are very turbulent, with violent updraughts and downdraughts. The upper portion of a cumulonimbus cloud may spread out to form an anvil or vast plume and is known as incus, anvil cloud or thunderhead | |
