The Earth's atmosphere seen at sunset from orbit. This view of the Earth's limb shows vast cumulonimbus thunder clouds silhouetted against the Sun,their cirrus 'anvil' tops defining the tropopause. Low altitude, dense air refracts the red light from the Sun,whilst higher thinner air refracts predominantly blue light. Very clear layering is seen in the blue portion, thought to be due to scattering by suspended particles of ash from volcanic eruptions at Mount Pinatubo (Philippines,1991) and Mount Spurr (Alaska,1992).
