Using a flask of liquid nitrogen to freeze carbon dioxide gas in a glass ampoule as a stage in the radiocarbon dating of carboniferous samples. The carbon dioxide will be converted to graphite, used to determine the level of the carbon-14 isotope by an accelerator mass spectrometer. Evaluation of this figure and comparison with the proportion of carbon-12 present leads to a value indicating an age of the original sample.
