Portrait montage of William Dalton Hooker,Charles Darwin, and Sir Charles Lyell by C.H. Jeens. Steel engravings ca 1875. While Darwin worked alone, two influential scientific friends supported and mentored him. Their help was to be vital. Left,William Dalton Hooker,Botanist at Kew. And right,Sir Charles Lyell, geologist. Both knew Darwin's ideas on evolution by natural selection before publication of 'On the Origin of Speciesins in 1859. Both profoundly influenced his ideas and way of working (an off hand comment by Hooker led to Darwin working for years on Barnacles!). They helped get Darwin's paper on Natural Selection published with Wallace's at the Linnean Society in July 1858. They encouraged Darwin to publish his Origins. After the publication,T.H. Huxley would join the group as 'Darwin's bulldog' and defender of the evolutionary faith | |
