Duck billed Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) engraved by W. Lizars. From Jardine's series "The Naturalist's Library; Mammalia" 1841 ("The Natural History of Marsupialia or Pouched Animals" 1841 by G.R. Waterhouse). The animal was first described and illustrated for European science by Shaw and Nodder in 1799. It was thought to have conceivably been a hoax. Later revelations by Sir Everard Home that this mammal laid eggs confirmed it as one of the oddest of the Australian oddities. The platypus is one of the few surviving mammals of the Monotremes | |
