This is now known as the African Hunting dog (lycaon pictus) and this was the first appearance of the animal in Europe. Taxonomic confusion meant that this unusual canid was at first included in the hyaenas (a seperate carnivore group from the canids) in Cuviers 'Animal Kingdom'. The Zoological Society of London,established in 1826,is the the oldest zoological society in the world.
