Guerrillas Indian Massacre Johann Moritz Rugendas in Das Mertwurdigste aus der malerischen Reise,by J. Brodtmann after Rugendas, folio,Schaffhausen,J. Brodtman,1836. Showing a massacre of native rainforest indians by Guerillas in Brazil at the turn of the 19th Century. Clearly such atrocities had the condemnation of artists like Rugendas, but they continued anyway. The indian population had already been decimated by introduced disease. This attack is against the Botocudo of eastern Minas Gerais and southern Bahia. Rugendas describes the attack ' They hunt the indians wherever they find them. They seek if possible to suprise them at their encampments. Suprised in this way the savages attempt to escape by fleeing. As a rule the soldiers massacre all who fall into their hands. Only rarely do they spare the women and children." | |
