Bertuch Platypus 1798 Volume 3 of his "BilderBuch fur Kinder" published in 1798,contained an illustration of the Platypus and skull,(Plate LXIV original hand colouring) and included a description and name given by the German naturalist,Johann Blumenbach. The name Ornithorhynchus paradoxes had not been published by Blumenbach at that time and so suggests he gave Bertuch access to work in progress. Shaw's 1799 (also in this collection) remained the first official description but the genus name Platypus which Shaw used was replaced by Blumenbachs Ornithorhynchus when it was shown that Platypus was already in use for a genus of beetles | |
