Hand coloured lithograph circa 1790 derived from a painting commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820) following his voyage of discovery with Captain James Cook to the Pacific (1768–71). The painting is by George Stubbs (1724–1806),the foremost animal painter in Britain during the 18th century. At this time the kangaroo was entierly new. The too small arms are perhaps a forgiveable lapse in accuracy. The text notes it is found on the coast of New Holland | |
