Plate CCCXVII original hand colour by Christian von Schreber "Die Sauetheire in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen" 1883. The quagga (Equus quagga quagga) is an extinct subspecies of plains zebra about 260 cm long(8 ft 6 in) long and 125–135 cm (4 ft 1 in–4 ft 5 in) tall at the shoulder. It lived in South Africa, the last wild individuals were gone by 1878. Their extinction was the result of hunting and competition for grazing. The last captive specimen died in Amsterdam on 12 August 1883. It was originally considered a separate species because of its unusual markings, but genetic studies in the 1980's have shown it to simply be the southernmost subspecies of plains zebra. Its call sounds like "kwa-ha-ha" and gives it its name. There have been attempts to resurrect the Quagga by selectively breeding for its characters in a population of Burchell's zebras | |
