Cannibals. Published ca 1560 for the "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Munster. The prospect of men that were cannibals held considerable fascination for scholars of the late medieval and renaissance times. It can trace its origins back to the works of Pliny the Elder in Rome. A later version of this illustration was republished by T.H. Huxley in his "Man's Place in Nature" of 1863. Despite being a book about human evolution it illustrates a strange chapter aside about African Cannibalism in the sixteenth century | |
