George John Romanes. Portrait of the Canadian- born English naturalist George John Romanes (1848-1894) with later tinting. Romanes was a close friend of Charles Darwin and wrote books extending and supporting Darwin's ideas on evolution. Two such books were Animal intelligence (published in 1881) and Mental Evolution in Man (published 1888). It was at Cambridge that he came first to the attention of Charles Darwin: "How glad I am that you are so young!" said Darwin. The two remained friends for life | |
