1532 Diver using dive helmet with air tube to breathe, with close up of dive helmet. Woodcut with later tinting from De Re Militari Libri Quator by Vegetalius, printed in 1532 by Christian Wechel from sources reaching back to the Roman original of 390AD. This is a very rare example of medieval woodcut using line shading to represent underwater - an innovation of this book. The fact that various bladders and tubes were used in during military exploits underwater is a suprise to many. How practical the device's flexible snorkel would be under the pressure of the surrounding deep water is questionable | |
