Dorothy Wrinch and Daniel Mazia
British mathematician and biochemical theorist Dorothy Maud Wrinch (centre,1894-1976) and US cell biologist Daniel Mazia (right,1912-1996). Wrinch is best known for her attempt to deduce protein structure using mathematical principles and is credited with playing a large part in the beginnings of modern research in molecular biology. In 1932 Wrinch was one of the founders of the Biotheoretical Gathering,an inter-disciplinary group that sought to explain life by discovering how proteins work. Mazia is best known for his studies of the cell cycle,a term he coined. In 1951,along with Katsuma Dan,he isolated the mitotic apparatus that organise the chromosomes during cell division
