The Abbé Francois Napoleon Marie Moigno (1804-1884),is considered one of the most learned men of France and of the Catholic Church in the 19th century. He was a Jesuit with a particular interest in science,and in 1836 the Order appointed him professor of mathematics at the college of Sainte-Geneviéve in Paris. He wrote numerous articles for the press. After he had published a two-volume work on calculus,the Jesuit Order sought to restrict his scientific activities. In 1843 he left the Jesuit Order. In 1850 he became scientific editor of the journal “Presse†followed by “Pays†in 1851. He founded the scientific journal “Cosmos†in 1852.
