19th century illustrations of a camera lucida in use (centre) and its components. A prism (a) in the top of the device allows an artist to view the subject and drawing surface simultaneously and so accurately reproduce perspective. If needed lenses (round) can be used to refocus the image. The camera lucida was invented by William Hyde Wollaston in 1807,but was first described by Johanees Kepler in 1611.b Illustration from 'Description of the camera lucida' (1830) by George Dolland | |
